James, our first, has an August birthday. I didn't feel like he was ready to start when he was just turning five, so we waited until he was just turning 6. (We start school in early August, usually). Redshirting usually refers to having a kid repeat K, actually. I think I will change my terminology in this piece, because I simply had my son do an extra year of preschool rather than starting him in K and having him be one of the youngest in his grade.
